We live in southern British Columbia, Canada and have children in Texas. Instead of flying or driving, we think it might be fun to go by train. Can anyone tell us how we might go about finding a passenger train routing from, say Bellingham, Wa., to Dallas or Fort Worth Texas? Be ever so grateful!

The routing you are requesting is possible, but it is not the easiests.

There are misconnections in Seattle and Los Angeles if you decide to head south then east. If you decide to go east then south, you would have misconnections in Seattle and Chicago.

If you could get to Seattle first, here are some options for you:

Amtrak's Coast Starlight to Los Anglese. Overnight in LA
Amtrak's Texas Eagle from LA to Dallas

or

Amtrak's Empire Builder to Chicago. Overnight in Chicago
Amtrak's Texas Eagle to Dallas

Connections between Seattle and Bellingham will require and Amtrak thruway bus or the Cascade Train and a forced overnight in Seattle.

Thank you for your response. I guess, that is enough of a skeleton that I can take to the travel agent...see if they can add a little meat to the bone...and a dollar cost. It would be a shame however, to take half the trip on an overnight.

Cheers!

The trip is self will be an overnight between Seattle and LAX and an overnight between LAX and Dallas, as well as a hotel stay in LAX

The alternate route would be two overnights between Seattle and Chicago and one overnight between Chicago and Dallas, as well as the hotel stay in Chicago.

Also, please keep in mind that te Texas Eagle between LAX and Dallas only runs about three times per week.

Best of Luck on your planning.

Thanks again! I guess we still have a little catching up to do, when we consider the European rail system.

You can take the Coast Starlight from Seattle,Washington to Los Angeles. Overnight in L.A. Next day the Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle from L.A. to Dallas. Check the Amtrak timetable as the The Sunset Limited/ Texas Eagle runs combined only three times a week between L.A. and Dallas. The Texas Eagle starts at Chicago and ends at San Antonio, Texas on most days. You return to Seattle the same way with another overnight in L.A. on the way back to Seattle.
